Last week, Upper and Middle School Performing Arts teachers Clark Taylor and Brittany Schmutzler traveled with a group of Upper School Theatre students to Columbus, GA where the students competed in the Georgia Theatre Conference.

The conference is a hybrid competition and workshop experience where students are able to attend performances by other schools, participate in workshops on all aspects of acting/technical theatre, meet peers from around the state, and compete in individual events.

The students were even able to meet up with alumna Julia Willingham, who is currently pursuing theatre at Georgia College.

Thirteen of our students, along with 27 other schools, a total of 856 student actors and technicians, garnered superior rankings in technical design for lighting (Jake Lortz), sound design (Eleanor Madderra), and in acting for group (Win Scott, Charlotte Nickell, Michael Barwood, Jackson Aull, Thomas Kinser, Addie Vogt, Miller Woodall, Peyton DeWeese, and Caroline Morrison. For acting duo, (Arden Adams and Jack McGuire, who, along with Jake, were part of the Chapter Select performance presented to the entire conference attendees. All will move on to participate in nationals this summer at Indiana University with over seven thousand educational theatre artists!

This will be Mount Vernon’s third time attending the International Thespian Conference, beginning with one student (Arden Adams) in 2018, and now more than a dozen in 2020. Congratulations to Clark Taylor, the MV theatre team and troupe 7702!
