Athletic Highlights 9/9/15

Sep 16, 2015 | Highlights, MS Athletics, US Athletics

Big congratulations to Coach Dabbs and the Football staff for a HUGE road win on Friday, 9/4Β @ Town’s County! This past week was a busy one for the Mustangs at all levels!

Varsity Football took on the Indians of Town’s County Friday night in beautiful Hiawassee, Georgia and boy was it a great night under the lights! Big shout out to QB Jacob Cavender for being named a top performer in last week’s game by the AJC! Cavender went 13/15 with 214 total yards and 2 TD passes! Great job leading the Mustangs on the offensive #14! He couldn’t have done it without the help of his teammates. Congrats to players of the game:Β Offensive Player of the Game: Ahmir Lee (4 receptions, 105 total receiving yards and 1 TD, he also had 18 carries for 138 rushing yards and 3 TDs!) andΒ Defensive Player of the Game: Parker Corley.

Varsity Softball took on 4-AAAA St. Pius X, Wednesday, 9/2. The girls were able to bounce back from a rough inning ondefense and hang a total of 6 runs on the board, earning them the 6-3 WIN over the Lady Lions of St. Pius. Junior Emma Edmonson, went 4-4 with 1 RBI, senior Taylor LeRoy, went 2-3 with a stand up triple, tacking on 2 RBIs andΒ senior Helen Hudgens, pitched an outstanding game. *This win was particularly special as St. Pius X is Coach Kay’s alma mater! Way to go ladies! See them in action at home on 9/10 vs. tough region opponent Landmark Christian. Game starts @ 5:00!

For Varsity Cross Country, a Mustang team of 30 runners (10 girls, 20 boys) – smaller than usual due to the Labor
Day holiday – traveled to Fayetteville to compete in the AT&T Panther Invitational.Β For the second straight week, the Mustangs competed against a field stacked withΒ some of the best cross country runners in the state of Georgia. Against this field, theΒ top 5 varsity boys averaged 20:36, an improvement of 0:00:40 over last week, despiteΒ the loss of Garrett Hahn to a hip injury sustained in practice. The varsity boys placed 18th of 22 teams. The JV girls placed 11th of 13 teams, and the top 5 varsity girls ran an average time of 25:16, a 16 second improvement over the prior week. On the JV side, the boys placed 18th of 22 teams, and the girls placed 17th of 18 teams, with the top 5 JV boys averaging 23:03 (27 seconds faster than last week), and the JV girls averaging 31:38, 45 seconds slower than last week. Both teams were missing several runners due to the holiday weekend.
This was a new meet for the Mustangs this year, so there are no year-over-yearΒ comparisons available. However, this was an attractive meet to enter, as the RegionΒ Championship will be held on this course, and the highly competitive field brings out
the best in our runners. Chris Smith (20:00), Kippy Ngeny (20:12), and Maclean Peterson (20:18) led the varsity boys, while Maxine Peterson (22:03) and Avery Maxwell (24:44) led the varsity girls. Maxine’s time is the new all time MVPS female record; she lowered her own previous record by 27 seconds. In another indication of broad-based improvement, 14 Mustangs (7 boys and 7 girls)Β set a career PR at this meet, and these 14 runners improved on their previous personalΒ record by an average of 50 seconds.

Varsity Volleyball shut out North Cobb Chrisatian on Thursday, 9/3 with S1: 25-16 and S2: 25-11. Due to illness, some of the girls had to really step it up by playing out of their usual position or making an impact coming in from the bench. Senior Katie Ryan came up big for the lady Mustangs as did junior Allie Peterka, who pulled double duty, playing both JV and Varsity. Allie moved out of her middle hitter comfort zone to play outside, adding to the overall success of the team.Β Coach B said the girls played very strong as a team from start to finish. *The ladies returned to the court yesterday, facing region teams Galloway and Pinecrest @ 5:00 & 7:00pm. Stay tuned next week for highlights from that game!

JV Volleyball has added to their wins this season by defeating both Galloway and Pinecrest is straight sets yesterday! The girls take the floor again tomorrow on the road in North Georgia! Wish them luck!

Middle School XC kicked off their season at Marist last week. Great start for the young Mustangs! Coach Cain and Coach Hendry are so proud of our runners at our first meet this season. Middle school runners showed dedication and heart throughout their entire two mile race. We are so impressed with how MVPS runners encouraged and drove each other to succeed. About a fourth of our team broke their records from last year, and all of our first-time racers set a great pace for their first meet. Check out the top 3 performers for girls and boys:
