“Gar oo chugar – There was and there was not.”
Aram Tomasian, the only member of his family to have survived the Armenian genocide during World War I, has immigrated to America. Determined to begin a new family and a new life as a photographer, he arranges a marriage by proxy with a picture bride, Seta. The play opens as Aram and Seta meet for the first time. The two are polar opposites, with justΒ one tragic experience in common. Peppered with humor, irony, and bittersweet surprise, the play unfolds around the effort of the couple to build a family, until the presence of an orphaned boy forces them not only to reckon with each other, but also their past.
In Beast on the Moon, playwright Richard Kalinoski takesΒ actual historical detailsΒ of Armenian history and, through his poetβs imagination, fashions a universal story which speaks to all people of all times and of all places. A story of hope, healing, redemption, and finally, love.
