#IHaveMoreThanINeed

Last week in Middle School Chapel, Coach Tarrik Mabon (Coach T) gave the students a challenge. He shared a story about the University of Virginia Head Basketball Coach Tony Bennett who led the UVA Men’s Basketball team to both their first Final Four appearance and first NCAA Championship in the school’s history in 2019.

Following the team’s successful season, the university offered Coach Bennett a generous raise. He quickly turned the raise down, sharing “I have more than I need. I’m blessed beyond what I deserve.”

Inspired by Coach Bennett’s words, Coach T introduced a #IHaveMoreThanINeed challenge to the Middle School students.

Coach T encouraged students to go home and look at their belongings, with #IHaveMoreThanINeed in mind. Then, choose one item (or more) to donate. He gave three options of where students could donate their items: Foster Cares, Community Assistance Center and Mary Hall Freedom House.

Over the past week, students and teachers have been going through their belongings, taking photos of them and posting #IHaveMoreThanINeed and donating their items.

This morning, Wednesday, October 9, Coach T shared the outcome with all of the students along with a message for the rest of the year. There are less than three months left in 2019. How are we treating others? How are we treating ourselves? Are we being the best version of ourselves that we can be? He encouraged students to look in the mirror every morning and every night and always try to be their best.

But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, that Christ’s power may rest on me.” 2 Corinthians 12:9
