Two of our Mount Vernon Mustangs were in contention to win at the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) Girls State Track & Field Championships, which recently took place in Albany, Georgia.
Junior Morgan Lewis competed in the 100-meter hurdles and placed first in the state in the GHSA, becoming the Varsity Girls State Champion. Morgan blew away the rest of the Class A Private finalists to win the gold medal with a personal best time of 14.32 seconds. Watch Morgan fly by her competition, here.
By winning the Class A State Championship in this event, Morgan has been selected to compete in the first-ever USA Track and Field Meet of Champions of Georgia. Where all state champions will compete head to head.
In addition to winning the gold medal in the hurdles event, Morgan went on to win the silver medal in the girls 200-meter dash.
Also to be congratulated is senior Autumn Burnette, who in her first year competing for Varsity Track & Field, made the podium with a top 5 finish in the girls shot put. This is the highest finish for a Mount Vernon girls field event athlete, ever, in the GHSA era.
Congratulations to both Morgan and Autumn for being strong, courageous, and swift. We are proud that you are Mustangs!
