Mount Vernon Boys Basketball Makes Statement With Big Win Over Holy Innocents

The Mount Vernon Presbyterian Boys Basketball Team continued it’s stellar season with perhaps it’s strongest showing to date, a 55 to 37 victory over neighborhood rival Holy Innocents. The Mustangs led from the opening tip off and dominated the game with smothering defense and a fast paced offense. Freshman duo Darius Perry and Greg James and Seniors Eric Sparks and Drew Anderson led a potent Mustang attack. Perry scored from inside and out and ran the point with precision. James was able to consistently slash to the basket and showed his usual soft touch from the perimeter. Sparks continued his strong season, dominating the paint and leading the team in rebounds, while Anderson’s sharpshooting from three point range quickly put an end to any threat posed by the Bears. Mount Vernon entered the game with an overall record of 21 – 3, good for a top 10 GHSA Division 1 ranking. Holy Innocents, holders of a 19 – 3 record, entered the game ranked in the state’s top 5.
The clash of the two top 10 teams, located just minutes from one another, was highly anticipated, and on this night, it was the Mustangs of Mount Vernon who rose to the challenge, notching a solid road win that will surely get the attention of the rest of the state. This was a statement win. A sound beating of a quality opponent on the road. It is the type of win that can define a season and elevate a program. In just it’s second season in GHSA, Mount Vernon has already proven to be a program that must be taken seriously. Head Coach Curtis Berry has done a masterful job of getting the most out of this young squad and not allowing them to look ahead.
“We have worked hard and are coming together, but we know that in order to continue our success, we must focus on the task at hand and not get ahead of ourselves. We need to stay consistent and focused.”
To date, the squad has done just that and shows no signs of slowing down. Friday’s performance is evidence of that.
