MVArtists are doing their part in expanding the Mount Vernon footprint. Hundreds of works of art will have been submitted to juried art shows throughout Georgia during the 2016-2017 school year.
Mount Vernon submitted 33 works of art submitted by students in grades 7-12. Not only did Mustangs win 2nd and 3rd place, but were chosen to fill 9 of the 10 available positions in the show. The students’ work is hung and will be on display at Tutoring Solutions through the remainder of the school year and their work is also displayed online.
Matt Johnson, Owner of Tutoring Solutions and Contest Coordinator Sonja Harrast organized the themed competition – “Interpretations of the City”. With a jury panel comprised of three renowned artists: Pat Drew, David Cohen, and Libby Devine, the pieces were judged on creativity, originality, applicability to the theme, and skilled use of the chosen media. The first place prize was $250, second place was $100, and third place, $50.

Mr. Kunath shares, “I was so proud that Matt called to ask if he could come to Mount Vernon to present the awards personally! Our students owned the opportunity to participate and it showed. For them to have this exposure, to be able to create beautiful work, and to gain confidence shows me that they are getting real-world experience well beyond their years.”
