Art instructor Hank Kunath, his wife, Rosie, and Mariana Depetris led a group of ten Mount Vernon Upper School students to Savannah for the 35th annual Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) Sidewalk Chalk Arts festival and competition.
Held in historic Forsyth Park, the festival attracts hundreds of participants and thousands of attendees from around the world.
The competition is divided into four categories, SCAD alumni, SCAD graduate and undergraduate students, and prospective high school art students.
A constant stream of SCAD faculty, independent photographers, college and high school students, as well as festival attendees stopped to talk to the artists, asking questions about our School – it was a great day for Mount Vernon!
Students, Jonathan Jones, Dillon Briggs, Kathryn Danner, Makenzie Cartwright, Stacy She, Sierra Middleton, Shelby Garde (Trip Manager), Hannah Zenas, Lucy Kilgore and Evelyn Sharkey realized that while living together under the same roof for several days, a new family was formed and they all made a commitment to return in 2015.
The youngest student on the trip and only freshman, Lucy Kilgore, wrote a letter to thank MVPS leadership for her experience. In the note, Lucy writes, β€œI wanted to take a moment to thank you all so much for letting me and the group of students in the art department, go on the amazing art trip down to Savannah. Competing in the chalk competition was the best part. Having so many people walk by and tell you about how great your piece is looking, is one of the best feelings. Having Mr. Kunath and Mrs. Kunath as mentors throughout the whole thing was great as well. Also, the friendships that this trip has created for me will be lasting and fun. The people that went on the trip are all very powerful and smart young leaders. I will look up too all of the kids that were on the trip because they are not only leaders to me personally, but in the art world they are all excellent.”
Lucy continues, β€œSo thank you for letting us take opportunities like this!”
