IMG_1120The Sandy Springs Chapter of the Daughters of the Revolution have selected Hannah Zenas (Class of 2015) as this year’s DAR recipient. The Mount Vernon senior competed among a prestigious group of students from Sandy Springs, with the chapter naming Zenas as the winner.
To compete, Hannah wrote two essays; one completed in a 2-hour timed setting, focusing on ‘what our past tells us about our future’. The other essay focused on Hannah’s experience as an engaged citizen leader and servant in the community.
Hannah shares, “For the timed essay, I wrote about how our country is changing rapidly from its original values but that when times get tough, we can look back to our past as a beacon in the storm, and that some of our founding beliefs should not be changed but should be our roots in which we grow.”
Later this year, Hannah will also be recognized for earning the Girl Scouts Gold Award for her leadership and community service. The Gold Award is the highest recognition one may earn within the organization, much like the Eagle Scouts designation with the Boy Scouts of America.
After being recognized as Mount Vernon’s DAR representative, Hannah told her father who laughed and hugged her saying he, too was recognized as his school’s DAR in high school. “We both are very patriotic and strongly compelled toward our moral beliefs, so it really wasn’t too much of a surprise to me that he was awarded based on his dependability, leadership, service, and patriotism. I feel honored to be recognized for these qualities as well, and it has created a special bond between us.”
