While running a 5K race is the focal point of Mount Vernonโs Girls on the Run program, the experience also encompasses a service opportunity encouraging the girls to reach out to their community.
Recognizing the need to connect with nearby yet unfamiliar neighbors, the grade 3-5 participants recently spent an afternoon arranging flowers for the residents at Insignia, a senior living center. Each of the girls visited with residents, brought them baked goodies, and spent quality time learning about their lives.
Jennifer Franks, Insignia Director of Community Relations shares, โThe Girls on the Run is such an inspiring program, and Mount Vernonโs coaching staff is doing a wonderful job equipping and fostering these girls with the tools needed to build confidence and self-esteem. Our owners, Milton and Aileen were also very impressed with Mount Vernonโs girls, and they were so happy to see young lives willing to spend time with our seniors!โ
โI was so proud and touched by the maturity and kindness of our girls. It was a really great community service project for all of us,โ Dana Levitan, Girls on the Run coach shared.
The community service initiative and each weekโs Girls on the Run program would not have been possible without the leadership of its coaches, Rosalyn Merrick, Dana Levitan, Susie Parker, Erin McCubbin and Amy Johns.
