This student is among the hardest working that her teachers have seen. She embodies the Mount Vernon Mindsets, showing her willingness to innovate in order to solve new challenges creatively. He is a logical and critical thinker who knows how to evaluate new information relative to the current paradigm. The Fruit of the Spirit award honors students who distinguish themselves as Godβs servants, embodying the Fruit weβre focusing on this year: self-control, faithfulness, joy, and kindness.
Not only does this young woman have a caring heart and a positive attitude, she is beyond polite to adults and her peers alike. Always ready with a smile, a wave, and a βhelloβ, perhaps one of the kindest young women we have ever known, please join us in congratulating Kiera Campbell.
For everything there is a season and a time to every purpose, and one student at least is sure to know when that time is. This student demonstrates self-control in both work and leisure. This year, each Middle School student had the opportunity to create original work and build skills in maker, visual art, mindful yoga, technical design, brain jam, and performing arts. Even in a time of protocols and limitations, several students went above and beyond to create high quality work and give their absolute best no matter what. The Arts+Design Team would like to recognize these students for their achievements this year.

Grade 8 Most Outstanding Athlete Awards
Our most outstanding female athlete is a four-sport athlete in softball, cross country, basketball and track and field. In cross country, she split time on the diamond and on the trails. When she ran with the cross-country team, she led by example showing determination to push herself to new limits. At meets, she made running look effortless as she crushed the competition. She has been described as humble, hardworking, and kind. In basketball, this Mustang was selfless on the court making her a great leader because she always made the necessary sacrifices for her teammates. She knows how to turn on the switch to win. In track & field she came back from an ankle injury and qualified for state. Her coaches say she is a true testament of what it means to work hard and achieve your goals. It is with great pleasure that we present our Most Outstanding Female Athlete Award to Kennedy Reynolds!
Our most outstanding male athlete is a three-sport athlete in football, wrestling and lacrosse. On the football field, this Mustang was a punishing big-play runner, led the team in tackles on defense and was the first one down the field on special teams. He was the catalyst for all that the team accomplished on both sides of the ball. In wrestling, his coaches describe him as a hard worker, great athlete, mentally tough, and an ultimate competitor. He finished first in the Metro-10 Tournament this past winter. In lacrosse, his coaches say his ability to learn and never give up is contagious. And his attitude uplifts the people around him. It is with great pleasure that we present our Most Outstanding Male Athlete Award to Walker Warshaw!
Grade 8 Prefect Award
The Prefect Award is a great honor bestowed upon a grade 8 student. To be nominated for this award, a student must demonstrate exemplary leadership, dedication, and represent the highest ideals of Mount Vernon Presbyterian School.mDistinct from our program of Middle School Junior Prefects, this is a separate honor that we bestow upon the one individual who has embodied each of the finest qualities of the Mount Vernon Mindsets, Fruits of the Spirit, and Strengths of Character. This student must be one to embrace challenges, both academically and socially, as well as to seek innovative solutions to all conflicts. Through kindness, empathy, and joy, this 8th grader raises up her classmates and teachers, and she is ever faithful to the integrity of her own character. She continually seeks to improve herself, both seeking creative approaches to topics that interest her, and surrounding herself with true friends. A rare quality in a middle schooler, this student has the courage to do what is right, even in the face of adversity. The 2020-21 Prefect Award goes to Liana Nketia-Gyasi.
Grade 7 Mindset Awards
This student has worked extremely hard as a virtual student this year in addition to being new to our MV community. They showed creative thinker attributes in their writing as well as in their projects. As a virtual student, they showed solution seeker, innovator, and ethical decision maker attributes as they kept up with their work and found innovative ways to stay connected to classmates. They have demonstrated diligence and excellence during such unprecedented times and we couldnβt be more proud of them. Please join us in congratulating Jewel Mayfield.
This amazing individual joined our MV community later in the year in such a seamless way and has demonstrated excellence in her work every day. She exhibits creativity in her artwork and narrative writing and is always open to feedback. She manages to go that extra mile, striving for advanced in every way possible and is always willing to collaborate with others. We are beyond lucky to have her as part of Mount Vernon Middle School. This student is so intuitive and understanding of different viewpoints and perspectives. He exemplifies ethical decision making and has such a natural ability to communicate with thoughtful sophistication, an amazing pun, or a funny joke. He embraces challenges and is constantly thinking of solutions that are outside of the box, and he makes outstanding contributions to small group and whole class discussions. This incredible student has grown tremendously this year in his communication skills and public speaking. He is always willing to share during class discussions and loves to share his thoughts and ideas around current events or interesting factoids about science and other neat stuff. His class presentations show an outstanding knowledge base as well as passion, as he worked very hard to prepare for them. This student has truly found his voice as a leader this year. He is willing to collaborate and communicate with his peers and sets the bar high for excellence in classwork and participation. He has shown maturity by taking responsibility for the mistakes he has made in the past and independently making the choice to behave better and treat others with more kindness and respect. This individual is the rare kind of person who can take on a subject with the seriousness it deserves. She is attentive, engaged, and hard-working, but is also fun-loving and quick to smile. She does not allow her talents to be a detriment to others around her, as many immature but intelligent adolescents are given to do. She has shown outstanding leadership during her first year at MV as a Junior Prefect. She has elevated our classrooms and weβve felt fortunate to have her as a student. Not many students can exhibit patience, peace, and gentleness during these challenging times. But one student in particular managed to do just that. This young man used his quiet strength to show the fruits of the spirit not always with his words or having a loud voice, but more with his actions and his hard work and interactions with his friends. This student exemplifies several MV mindsets, but one she most demonstrates is collaborator. A collaborator βbuilds strong partnerships within a diverse team; teaches, coaches, and leads others by example; and accepts feedback, implements decisions, and shares the credit.β Over the course of the year, this studentβs involvement in her community, her academic classes, her athletic pursuits as well as her participation as a Junior Prefect show how collaborative she is, regardless of context. With a sense of humor, this student is βall inβ with every assignment he starts. He generally takes his assignments up a notch and then he uses feedback from peers and teachers to go up one more notch. This constant drive to raise the level is evidenced in the classroom, at recess, and on the athletic field and makes this student an excellent example of an innovator. He consistently communicates with intentionality and respect for teachers and his fellow students. He does not work for grades but works for understanding and learning. He shows leadership qualities by working well with others and being open and willing to collaborate with all of his peers; he is an ethical decision-maker who is respected as a team member because he is intrinsically motivated to seek solutions.
