As a part of a joint-effort between the National Football League (NFL) and the Cooper Institute, Mount Vernon students will have the opportunity be a part of national study intended to improve student fitness levels.
Mount Vernon has been chosen by the NFL as one of 32 schools nationally (only one in Georgia) to be a part of the NFL Play 60 FitnessGram Project. The project quantitatively measures the effects of the project on the health of children in grades 1-8.
Through its Play 60 campaign, the NFL encourages children to engage in 60 minutes of physical activity per day. The NFL works with The Cooper Institute to evaluate the success of the program using several measures. One of the tools used to evaluate the program’s success in schools is the Copper Institute’s “FitnessGram” testing. This software is widely recognized in schools throughout the nation and assesses multiple areas of physical fitness in students, including upper and lower body strength, cardiovascular endurance and flexibility.
As part of this study, the MVPS community will benefit in many ways. First, through it’s partnership with the NFL and Atlanta Falcons, the school will host player events and have the opportunity to meet and work with Atlanta Falcon players. Mount Vernon students will also benefit because as part of the study, our results will be measured and analyzed by the NFL and the Cooper Institute. Upon completion of the study, the Cooper Institute will submit recommendations to the School community regarding ways to improve overall student fitness levels.
Another excellent feature includes giving families clear, accurate, measurable results regarding the student population’s overall health. This data will help inform future PE curriculum.
MVPS Physical Education & Wellness Coordinator Scott Cain, who submitted Mount Vernon’s application to be considered shares, “This project is exciting because it allows MVPS to partner with two highly recognized and respected organizations and gives our community access to some of the most innovative learning tools available in the areas of health and wellness. Our students will be part of a landmark study and our feedback will help shape the direction of the NFL Play 60 Campaign, which is synonymous with kids’ health. In the end, the Mount Vernon Wellness Initiative is about helping our incredible children realize the many benefits of a healthy lifestyle and this project is yet another way for us to do that.”
