A record-breaking crowd of students, families, and even members of Mount Vernon’s Boys Varsity Basketball team cheered the Mustangs on to victory last week. After winning the championship last year and playing an undefeated season this year, the boys 5th/6th grade basketball team holds the championship title once again.
Coach Troy Lutes, Coach Todd Pierce, and assistant Coach Jim Collins (all Mount Vernon parents) attribute much of the squad’s success to teamwork.
Coach Lutes shares, “All of the boys progressed in their basketball skills, and we definitely won some games along the way. However, where I think we really knocked it out of the park, and what I am most proud of the boys for is the way they came together not only on the court, but off the court as well. Sometimes during practice, I felt like an outsider watching them just have a good time together as buddies first and teammates second. There were no egos with this crew, and that is a rare thing in today’s world. While we are super proud of the undefeated/Championship season, we should be prouder of our boys by the way they accepted each other and their roles on the team.”
The team coaches also emphasize their successful season would not have been possible without the organizational support of the team mom, Julie Allison.
Congratulations Mustangs on a tremendous season! The members of the 5th/6th grade basketball team are:
Cole Allison, Reed Collins, Hayden France, Jackson Langley, Sam Lin, Tyler Lutes, Will Palmer, Cooper Patnode, Sean Pierce, Dawson Stevens, Austin Taylor, & Jackson Toller
