Transcripts and resumés offer a very narrow view of a candidate, but badges provide an opportunity to highlight skills, talents, and experiences that allow a recruiter to search for very specific qualities that will ensure a successful match.
Because at Mount Vernon we believe in fostering a culture of growth and learning, this summer, faculty in the Middle School began developing a way to illuminate their learning paths through earning badges that represent and celebrate skills, accomplishments, and growth. Each badge has a very specific description, set of criteria, and evidence of accomplishment that must be completed in order to be earned.
During re-planning, faculty had the opportunity to begin this journey by earning several different badges that showcase a variety of skills. Among these was the “Flying Ace Drone” badge.  Faculty had an exciting time learning to fly their new drone and brainstorming ideas on how to use this tool in the classroom.
So far, 63 badges have been awarded to represent the depth and breadth of the talent of our faculty. Throughout the year we will continue to develop new badges for our entire learning community. We are excited about the possibilities that badging presents and are eager to see our learning and growth become more visible.
