Reaffirming the School’s mission of preparing students to be engaged citizen leaders as well as living out Mount Vernon’s cultural norm of Sharing the Well, Pebble Tossers, Inc. has become a critical partner for the School.
Founded in 2008, Pebble Tossers is a nonprofit youth development organization that empowers and develops young people into responsible citizens and lifelong volunteers. Pebble Tossers promotes service learning and engaging children in social responsibility by connecting them with age-appropriate service projects.
Strengthening their partnership with the School, Pebble Tossers has created a variety of Mount Vernon-only service projects between December and May. Sign up for one or more of the many family volunteer opportunities.
img_0464Pebble Tossers has already provided support to MVPS by organizing several service experiences for Helping Hands day, hosting a service learning workshop for families, and offering opportunities for students to become more engaged in volunteerism. Later in the year, the partnership will expand to include service opportunities during the Upper School’s Interim Week, to our National Honor Society’s service projects, and advising Upper School students who are seeking to make a local impact through their iProjects.

“The greatest gift one can give is thanksgiving. In giving gifts, we give what we can spare, but in giving thanks we give ourselves”.  – David Steindl-Rast
What if we honored the spirit of Thanksgiving every day? Not just through a feast on the table. What if we simply acknowledge life itself as the feast? When we truly stop to notice, we can see that the table of our lives is already set; overflowing with gifts of the Earth and our relationships, adorned with the magic and mysteries of body, mind and spirit, wrapped with the opportunity to learn, love, and serve.
We need only slow down to note the invitation of gratitude, and take our seat…
It is important to acknowledge that even in the midst of the most challenging times, there is a certain preciousness to life, and it is often those closest to the struggle of loss who know it most acutely. We all desire reasons to feel grateful, especially when we are in the midst of hardship. The moments around the table that are most poignant, and make our most meaningful memories, are those when we recognize aloud the blessings of our lives in the face of all that is untenable.
During this Thanksgiving holiday, be aware of small things for which you are grateful. Find them each day, for they will be present.
