It comes as no surprise to Mount Vernon’s girls volleyball and basketball programs and all the students who are influenced by her daily encouragement that coach Sharon Burnette has been named North Fulton’s Most Positive Athlete Girls Coach of the year.
On May 5 in a banquet ceremony led by Positive Athletes of Georgia, Coach Burnette received the honor among 2,000 nominees. Nominated by Upper School parent Lisa Ford, the presenters read the reasons Coach Burnette was selected.
Our Girls Coach comes from Mount Vernon Presbyterian School where the words dedicated, loving, positive, hard coaching, caring, passionate and beloved, are only the start of how Coach Sharon Burnette has affected her teams at Mount Vernon. The hours this Mom/Coach puts in at school are amazing, and the passion she displays makes her a tremendous role model for both the Girls Volleyball and Girls Basketball student-athletes. One of her players shared “I started this season saying I’m too short and too slow to be on this team. Over the course of the season I blossomed as a team player. My inspiration was fueled by Coach Burnette’s leadership. Incidentally, Coach Burnette’s daughter Autumn was recently named as the GHSA Player of the Year. Another reason her coaching is top notch and why tonight we are naming Sharon Burnette our Most Positive Girls Coach in North Fulton.
Positive Athlete Georgia is a movement by high-character professional athletes tied to Georgia professional and collegiate sports teams to promote the benefits of “positivity” to young athletes. Current and former professional athletes are members of this organization, and high school athletes are invited to join based on being nominated by a coach, school administrator, parent or fan for the annual Georgia Positive High School Athlete Awards.
