Grade 3 teacher Ashton Booher is doing more than encouraging reading, guiding grammar, and working through complex word problems with the students in her class. Miss Booher is also the leader of the “Break Into Business” PlayMaker course.
Every Thursday she meets with students in grades 3-6 who are interested in learning business skills after school.
Booher shares, “The first and most important skill they learn is communication. Sometimes eye contact, a firm handshake, and a smile will sell more product that the product itself.
“Along with communication, the class studied famous entrepreneurs, personality types, passions, target market, market research, and advertising. One of the students’ favorite parts of the class was pitching their ideas to real investors to help them cover their initial cost of starting their businesses.
“The class culminates in a business fair where students sell their products. The goal by the end of the fair is for each child to have a renewed interest in being an entrepreneur.”
~ One partnership discussed whether or not they should raise their prices because they didn’t have a lot of supply left.
~ One student was studying his notecards before the Shark Tank event because he wanted to do so well.
~ Several students were talking about what they would do differently in the next semester.
With all the money, ideas, and smiles exchanged across the tables, it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that Miss Booher met her goal!
