Through a massive effort, students in grades 5-12 recently made a significant dent in the effort to end world hunger by the year 2030.
The mission to abolish hunger, championed by the national organization Rise Against Hunger, inspired students as they collaborated in assembly-line fashion to package more than 13,000 meals for people in impoverished areas of the world. Their efforts, on top of what Lower School students accomplished in September, brought the total to 21,000 meals!
After hearing about the purpose behind Rise Against Hunger, students had the opportunity to ask questions throughout the project, such as:
Q: Where will the food be sent?
A: If not to hurricane-affected countries, the food MV students packaged will feed school children in areas of Zambia. Specifically Rise Against Hunger works with the organization Alliance for Children Everywhere (ACE). Mount Vernon Presbyterian Church has a long-standing partnership with ACE, and each year parishioners participate in a 3-week mission trip to Zambia to work with children.
Q: What are the contents of each meal?
A: Each meal consists of soy protein, dehydrated vegetables, a vitamin packet, and rice. Β
Q: What does each meal cost?
A: $0.29 cents
This year’s Rise Against Hunger project is a result of an ongoing partnership between Mount Vernon and Pebble Tossers. Pebble Tossers is a local organization that empowers and develops young people to be lifelong volunteers by connecting them with age-appropriate service projects.
