Two Mustang athletes and members of the Class of 2017, Jay Middleton and John Traurig, can now consider themselves sports reporters, writing articles for regular submission to our neighborhood newspapers. This duo also co-manage the Standing Room Only Twitter feed – a sports update by students for students.
In the articles below, both written by Jay and John, one captures our varsity football team’s historic win on Friday night vs. The Walker School; the other article highlights our varsity volleyball team’s most recent wins against Galloway and Wesleyan.

The Mount Vernon Mustangs continued their promising 2016 campaign last week. After recording the school’s first ever shutout in the season opener against Whitefield 41-0, Mount Vernon wrote its name in the records books once again. Defeating the Walker Wolverines 23-16, the Mustangs led by Head Coach Wayne Dabbs, is now off to a 2-0 start for the first time in school history since joining GHSA.
The Mustangs came out of the gates quickly, opening up a 9-0 lead minutes into the first quarter after a safety and a 40-yard touchdown run by QB Ethan Mangum. However, with the help of a couple big plays, including an onside kick recovery, Walker took the lead 10-9 early in the second quarter. The Mustang offense quickly answered with a nice drive of its own, capped off by a five-yard touchdown pass from Mangum to WR Brooks Langley in the corner of the end zone, making the score 16-10. Minutes before halftime, Walker tacked on a field goal, making the score 16-13. The third quarter was a defensive battle as no team was able to score. However, midway into the fourth quarter, the Mustangs broke through. Mangum ran for his second touchdown of the game which was set up by multiple big runs by Navy commit, RB Ahmir Lee, making the score 23-13. The Mustang defense was able to withstand a late surge by the Wolverines, holding them to a FG in the red zone and forcing a fumble to seal the game. A total team effort gave the Mustangs another history making win.

Mustangs Continue to Roll
By: Jay Middleton and John Traurig, Class of 2017
The Mount Vernon girls varsity volleyball team continued its great start to the season August 30. The Mustangs easily handled arch rival Galloway, defeating them two sets to 0, earning their first region win. However, their next match against Wesleyan wasn’t as easy. Wesleyan won the first set, but the Mustang girls were able to bounce back and win the second set, forcing a decisive third set. The Mustangs started off slow in the third set,  getting down early and Wesleyan seemed to be in control of the match. However, the Mustangs kept scrapping and found a way to win 10 straight points, led by Zoe Stupek, Juliana Tyrell, and Andie Weathers. Their efforts sealed the win in the decisive third set, 25-18, and the Mustangs moved to 2-0 in region play this season.
