The Early Bird Gets Healthy!

Nov 26, 2013 | Lower School News, Uncategorized

It is not lack of sleep or a result of caffeine deprivation.ย You are not dreaming . ย You DO, in fact, see a LARGE group of students exercising at 7:30 a.m. on the Founders Campus lawn.ย While parents are sipping your coffee in carpool, Lower School students are doing sprints, lunges, jumping jacks and bear crawls. They are doing so willingly, with huge smiles on their faces and amazing attitudes.
As part of the new Mount Vernon Wellness Initiative, students now have the opportunity to exercise with Coach Cain from7:30 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. ย The program has been such a success that within a week, it had outgrown it’s intended space and had to be moved outside.
“We had 5 students the first day and by Friday, the room was full of amazing kids exercising, smiling and having fun. ย Starting the day with physical activity is beneficial in so many ways. ย The kids absolutely love it and I am blessed to be a part of it,” said Coach Cain. ย “We have kids begging their parents to bring them to school early just so they can exercise with their friends. I cannot tell you how happy this makes me!”
“Early Bird Exercise” is one of many programs being embraced by students, parents, faculty and administration alike. ย Healthy students are happier and studies show a strong link between exercise and improved academic performance.
This program is part of a large scale initiative to help promote a happier, healthier environment. ย Next up is a fantastic event on Thursday, October 24 celebrating National Foodย Day (www.foodday.org). ย We hope you will be able to join us for the event featuring a healthy lunch with juicing/smoothie stations, Olympic style games, a garden ceremony, a healthy skit and a video of your incredible students learning about healthy living. ย For questions, please contact Scott Cain at:ย [email protected]
