BA2_3979On Friday, February 12, the count for the Class of 2016 Mustangs who will be moving on to play college athletics went up to three.
In addition to Lauren Daniel who signed in November to play softball at Young Harris, QB Jacob Cavender signed to play at University of Pikeville in Kentucky and Devon Morris will be an Ithaca College Bomber – playing soccer in New York.
Surrounded by family, former and current coaches, teammates and friends, both Jacob and Devon were celebrated for their athletic excellence, academic achievements, and overall character.
Coach Wayne Dabbs, who coached and mentored both athletes on the football field shared the following:

From the way he carried himself, his demeanor, the questions he asked and his determined mindset to improve, showed me he was very coachable. I have always referred to him as a sponge because he listened and wanted to make improvements. He obviously did a great job of making the necessary improvements or we wouldn’t be here today. At Mount Vernon, we are so blessed to have had you here with us, Jacob. We are proud of you and look forward to watching you succeed at Pikeville!”
Cavender was named 1st Team All-Region, led the region in passing yards and finished #4 in State in passing yards for the 2015-16 season.

“Devon – you were my first female football player, and what a privilege and honor it has been to have you as a special part of our team! Over the last year, I have learned to describe you as having the following character traits: leadership, determination, strong mental toughness, integrity, true character, dependability, caring, a true teammate, kind, and a really good kicker! As I said with Jacob, I wish we had one more season with you, Devon. We are so proud of all of your hard work and determined spirit, which will serve you well throughout your career in soccer.”
