Mount Vernon’s Varsity baseball team is making history. For the first time ever, the Varsity teamΒ has qualified for state playoffs (a pool of 16 teams), with a current record of 18-6 overall (8-2 in our conference). Since joining the Georgia High School Association (GHSA), MVPS has climbed uphill with successive records of:Β 0-18, 2-15, 12-8, and this year’s 18-6.
Currently ranked 14th, these MustangsΒ will play against the third seed, King’s Ridge. All playoff match-ups will be a best 2-of-3 series with the higher seed hosting. OnΒ Friday, April 29, theyΒ will play a double-header,Β with an “if needed” third game onΒ Saturday, April 30. If theyΒ win the first playoff series, theyΒ would play ourΒ next opponent on Wednesday,Β May 4 and Thursday, May 5Β in the same 2-3 setup.
Coach Jamey Woods says, “I believe that in a transition year, this team has done an amazing job of buying into the system and sticking to it. We’ve worked hard to focus on situational defense, and it has been the difference between a win and a loss in multiple games.Β Also, we while we are a young team with only two seniors [Jack Dupuy and Carson Mullen], we have a core of six juniors as starters.”
