Varsity Baseball Makes MVPS History By Qualifying for State Championship

Apr 27, 2016 | IMAMUSTANG, Uncategorized, Upper School News, US Athletics

BA2_1242Mount Vernon’s Varsity baseball team is making history. For the first time ever, the Varsity team has qualified for state playoffs (a pool of 16 teams), with a current record of 18-6 overall (8-2 in our conference). Since joining the Georgia High School Association (GHSA), MVPS has climbed uphill with successive records of: 0-18, 2-15, 12-8, and this year’s 18-6.
Currently ranked 14th, these Mustangs will play against the third seed, King’s Ridge. All playoff match-ups will be a best 2-of-3 series with the higher seed hosting. On Friday, April 29, they will play a double-header, with an “if needed” third game on Saturday, April 30. If they win the first playoff series, they would play our next opponent on Wednesday, May 4 and Thursday, May 5 in the same 2-3 setup.
Coach Jamey Woods says, “I believe that in a transition year, this team has done an amazing job of buying into the system and sticking to it. We’ve worked hard to focus on situational defense, and it has been the difference between a win and a loss in multiple games.  Also, we while we are a young team with only two seniors [Jack Dupuy and Carson Mullen], we have a core of six juniors as starters.”

Pitchers John Traurig, Jack Dupuy, Jack Mullen, and Peyton Evertsen have a combined record of 2.37 ERA
Offensively the team has been led by Carson Mullen batting .400 (20 stolen bases), John Traurig with a .359 batting average (11 stolen bases), and Peyton Evertsen with a .317 batting average (15 stolen bases).
Also, Jay Middleton has been the catcher for all but one game and has thrown out over 10 base-runners for the first time.
“I couldn’t be more proud of how our two seniors, Carson Mullen and Jack Dupuy, have led this young team. Coach Woods and his staff have done an incredible job,” shares MVPS Athletic Director Brad Dehem.
