At Mount Vernon, learning extends beyond the classroom—it thrives in meaningful conversations that strengthen our community. This year, Middle School students participated in a transformative Student Dialogue Series aimed at fostering self-leadership and integrity. Through seven structured discussions, students developed skills to navigate diverse perspectives, practice empathy, and contribute to a culture of connection—ensuring that learning remains a unifying force.

Designed to nurture engaged citizen leaders, the Student Dialogue Series strengthens empathy while building community and culture. Rooted in the Fruits of the Spirit, the Integrity Blueprint—developed at the beginning of the 2024-25 school year—guides these discussions, reinforcing shared values and deepening relationships.

Faculty and staff equipped students with strategies for engaging in complex discussions with confidence. Through structured reflection, shared purpose, and active listening, students developed self-awareness, recognized diverse perspectives, and strengthened relationships.

Dr. Chaundra Suddith played a key role in guiding the series, which took place over seven sessions during Mentor Group time. A reflective board captured students’ insights on values, empathy, and social-emotional wellness. Notable student perspectives included:

  • “I have learned more about listening to people and realized I have more on my mind than I thought. I can take action by talking to more people.”
  • “Listening with an open mind helps us grow. We don’t have to agree, but we should always respect each other.”
  • “It was nice to hear and share about our values because it helped me see what I should be grateful for.”

The Student Dialogue Series aligns with Target 4 (Culture & Connection) of Mount Vernon’s strategic plan, The Impact Ready Project, which emphasizes critical thinking, empathy, and ethical decision-making. By fostering respectful discussions, Mount Vernon prepares students for active, engaged citizenship.

As the second half of the 2024-25 academic year continues, the School remains committed to fostering a culture where students not only learn about integrity but actively practice it—both inside and outside the classroom. Through initiatives like the Student Dialogue Series, Mount Vernon is equipping students with the lifelong skills to lead with integrity, engage thoughtfully, and build meaningful connections in an increasingly complex world.
