Students in the Upper School wrestle with real-world problems and use design thinking strategies to seek extraordinary solutions. Rather than being passive consumers of information, Upper School learners are invited to actively solve complex problems, with an emphasis on project and team-based approaches. Mount Vernon offers three distinct pathways in the Upper School. We aim to use these pathways to deepen a learner’s engagement in purpose-driven projects, initiatives, and experiences that require discovery, teamwork, and application of knowledge to design impactful, viable solutions.

The Inquiry path is our flagship program for students who want to dive into topics in Humanities, Numeracy, Scientific Inquiry, and Maker, Arts, and Design in greater depth to better understand the world around them. The Inquiry path also features iProject coursework.
The Innovation path is for students who want to solve authentic problems for clients from a diverse range of sectors through the application of human-centered design. Interested students should be comfortable and willing to work in groups.
The Global Impact path is for students who want to experience the world now by analyzing the geopolitical landscape and global economy that they will graduate into. Interested students should be comfortable with international travel.
Upper School learners experience a rich tapestry of English, humanities, and social studies. Their curiosity is ignited as they gain insight and perspective into the human experience. In iProject, students take the lead in their own learning by designing and managing independent projects. iProject is a requirement for graduation. Innovation Diploma (iD) operates as a school-within-a-school model, where students apply for acceptance and engage in real-world problem-solving with industry partners.
