STUDENT AGENCY
Student agency is nurtured throughout the entire Mount Vernon experience, but it is especially apparent in the formal structure of our Upper Campus Prefect system, our vibrant club culture, and the call to serve others.
AT MOUNT VERNON, WE BELIEVE THAT A THRIVING COMMUNITY LEARNS, SERVES, AND GIVES - together.
STUDENT CLUBS
Students can take the initiative to form clubs tailored to their passions and interests, further nurturing their capacity for leadership and innovation. Clubs are a space for our students to become leaders and pursue their passions by sharing their interests with others.
There are over 40 student-created clubs in the Upper School and around 20 in the Middle School that meet regularly during the school day. We make room for a wide variety of clubs that range from American Sign Language to baking to board games. In each of these clubs, you will find students laughing and enjoying time with each other in a less structured environment. It’s the moment of the day that our students own and it feels special because it is their moment of connection with students who have similar interests and passions.
Clubs in
UPPER SCHOOL
The Mustang Memo, our school newspaper, started as a small club of close friends who were interested in journalism. It has grown into a club of over 60 students who are writing, editing, and publishing a student newspaper every month. This club is only as popular and successful as it is because students are the ones leading the charge. Is it perfect? No. Is it truly authentic student work, yes. And that’s what makes it impactful.
Examples of Upper School clubs include: Guitar, Pickleball, Beekeeping, Bible Study, Grub Club and the Mustang Memo
Clubs in
MIDDLE SCHOOL
Middle School hosts a club fair each fall, promoting student-generated opportunities, from Space Club to Girls’ Flag Football. These clubs meet before, during, and after school, and we are always open to new ideas to support student interests and passions.
Examples of Middle School clubs include: Girls’ Flag Football, Basketball, Chess, Dungeon’s and Dragons, Art and Space Club

TREE CLUB
A group of Kindergarten students were responsible for the creation of the first Club on the Lower Campus, The Tree Club, which sparked a wave of student agency and student-created clubs. Read about the Tree Club, that is currently 60 members strong!
