At the University of Michigan Law School in Ann Arbor, MI, freshman Katie Thompson competes in yet another debate tournament.
Katie and her partner competed in seven preliminary rounds against teams from around the country, focusing on this year’s tournament topic: “Resolved: The United States Federal Government should substantially curtail its domestic surveillance.” All competitors debate on both sides of the topic surrounding specific policy proposals in that particular area. With 67 novice teams in the competition, Katie and her partner from Westminster, finished with a 6-1 preliminary record and were the 4th seeded team. While they won their octofinal debate, they were eliminated in quarterfinals.
Debate Coach Zach Strother says, “Katie has a cumulative record of 12-6 in her high school debate career, and has been particularly motivated and inspired by her brother Will; she learns from him while trying to surpass his outstanding debate accomplishments.”
